Iran and Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministers discussed regional issues ahead of the OIC meeting, an important step in their reconciliation efforts. While Iran shows a keen interest in the talks, Gulf media maintain a cautious stance. The conversation comes in a context of U.S. sanctions on Iran, and both countries appear willing to address common challenges to strengthen ties.
The foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia engaged in discussions regarding regional developments prior to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting, as reported by Iranian state media IRNA. This dialogue is of particular significance to Iran, which has garnered considerable media attention domestically.
In contrast, Gulf media have been more reserved in their coverage. Arab News reported that “Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan made a phone call to his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday.” The conversation addressed regional issues and collaborative efforts.
Iran perceives Saudi Arabia as a vital avenue for potential engagement with the Trump administration, especially following the imposition of U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil trade entities. Furthermore, six entities linked to Iran’s drone and ballistic missile programs were also sanctioned recently.
In its outreach efforts, Iran recently hosted the Emir of Qatar, believing that Doha may assist in mediating discussions with Washington. Tehran seems inclined to avoid escalating provocations against the United States.
According to Iranian media reports, the two foreign ministers “reviewed the latest developments in the region and exchanged views on the agenda for the upcoming OIC foreign ministers’ meeting, which is set to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.” The meeting is expected to address significant political, economic, and security challenges faced by the Muslim world.
Over the past two years, Iran and Saudi Arabia have made strides towards reconciliation, with support from China and Iraq. Previously, Riyadh had been vocally opposed to Iran’s regional interventions, particularly regarding the Houthis. Recently, however, Saudi Arabia has been closely monitoring the developments, especially as Iran’s position in Syria has weakened significantly after the Assad regime’s decline.
The recent dialogue between Iranian and Saudi foreign ministers highlights the importance of regional collaboration ahead of the OIC meeting in Jeddah. Both nations appear to seek common ground amidst rising tensions, as Iran attempts to navigate a strategy for engagement with the U.S. and the broader Muslim community. The previous animosities are giving way to a cautious reconciliation, facilitated by external parties like China and Iraq.
