Amid the civil war in Sudan, Türkiye offers support to Sudanese students by relocating them to Turkish universities. The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) has initiated a program to facilitate academic continuity. This initiative highlights Türkiye’s commitment to education while enhancing diplomatic relations with Sudan.
In light of the ongoing civil war in Sudan, Türkiye has extended its support to Sudanese students and academics. El-Butana University students have been relocated to Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University in Türkiye, facilitated by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). This strategic initiative allows Sudanese students to continue their education amidst the conflict.
To address the educational crisis, YÖK has implemented the “Guest University Initiative,” which provides a platform for Sudan’s Bahri and El-Neelain Universities at Selçuk University and Inönü University, respectively. This initiative not only bolsters Türkiye-Sudan relations but is presented as a model for cooperative efforts within the Islamic world.
YÖK President Erol Özvar remarked on the importance of this educational support, stating it reinforces mutual relations and serves as a template for similar collaborations. He highlighted that the selected Turkish institutions already host Sudanese students, fostering a nurturing academic atmosphere.
As violent conflict continues in Sudan, resulting in significant casualties and humanitarian crises, El-Butana University’s infrastructure has been severely damaged, interrupting education for many students. The Sudanese Ministry of Higher Education sought assistance from YÖK to guarantee the continuation of academic pursuits for its students.
El-Butana University Rector Mohmoud Yacob Mohmoud expressed gratitude towards Türkiye for responding promptly to their plight. Although the university attempted remote learning, challenges in resources rendered it ineffective. Mohmoud emphasized his commitment to utilizing the knowledge gained in Türkiye to enhance Sudan’s educational framework.
Sudanese master’s student Ferass Aiaaldeen Gahalrsoul Faragalla is now benefiting from advanced laboratory facilities at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University. He stated, “Advanced laboratories and research centers will significantly enhance my practical studies. I will take this knowledge back to Sudan and contribute to my country’s development.”
Undergraduate student Rashida Ebrahim Hussein from El-Butana University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine also expressed optimism about her studies in Türkiye. She noted, “Here, I am learning to use advanced equipment, which I will take back to Sudan. Coming to Türkiye was a fresh start for my academic journey.”
The collaboration between Türkiye and Sudan during this challenging time exemplifies a proactive approach to educational disruptions caused by conflict. The Guest University Initiative will enable Sudanese students to acquire valuable knowledge and skills, which they can apply to their home country’s educational system. This partnership not only aids in the immediate need for educational continuity but also strengthens bilateral ties between Türkiye and Sudan. YÖK’s efforts ensure that the legacy of education remains intact for Sudanese youth, aiming for a brighter future despite ongoing challenges.
