The UN Security Council has reaffirmed its support for the Libyan people, advocating for a Libyan-led political process to achieve lasting peace. The Council called on the international community to back UNSMIL’s efforts and emphasized the need for upcoming elections. It also highlighted the importance of security sector reform and urged respect for the human rights of migrants.

On Thursday, the UN Security Council adopted a presidential statement urging the international community to support efforts for lasting peace in Libya, amidst ongoing instability and violent clashes involving rival factions. The statement highlighted the importance of establishing a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process, facilitated by the UN, enabling the Libyan populace to determine their governance through elections.

The Council expressed its strong support for UNSMIL, under the leadership of UN Special Representative Abdoulaye Bathily, who noted the political process is not meeting the aspirations of the Libyan people and announced a new mechanism to support upcoming elections. The Council encouraged leveraging the contributions of neighboring countries and regional organizations, particularly the African Union and the League of Arab States, toward achieving a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Furthermore, the Security Council endorsed the UN’s support for the Libyan High National Elections Commission and called for a needs assessment mission to ensure transparent national elections. The Council stressed the necessity for security sector reform and the disarmament of armed groups, aiming to establish a unified, accountable, civilian-led security framework in Libya.

The Council also expressed grave concern over human trafficking and the plight of migrants in Libya, urging the strengthening of border management. It called on Libyan authorities to uphold and protect the human rights of migrants while taking steps to close detention centers for migrants.

The UN Security Council reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Libyan people in their quest for a unified, democratic governance through inclusive elections. Emphasizing cooperation with neighboring nations and regional organizations, the Council highlighted the importance of security sector reform and the need to address human rights for migrants. By backing the ongoing efforts of the UN mission, the Council aims to facilitate a peaceful resolution to Libya’s challenges.
