The establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Ethiopia dates back to 1898 when the first Russian diplomatic mission, led by Pyotr Vlasov, arrived in Addis Ababa. The establishment of the Russian Cultural Centre in 1945 marked a notable milestone, with its opening attended by Emperor Haile Selassie I. Furthermore, the 1978 Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation significantly advanced their bilateral relations.
Pavlov emphasized the importance of Ethiopia as a key partner for Russia in Africa. He stated, “Ethiopia is indeed the ‘key’ to Africa. If earlier only South Africa represented the continent within BRICS, today Ethiopia also represents this continent honourably.” He remarked on Ethiopia’s substantial role in investments within infrastructure and industry, citing the country’s impressive GDP growth of 8.1 percent in 2024 as evidence of its rapid economic progress.
Additionally, Pavlov remarked on Africa’s significant role in global demographics, predicting it will influence population growth and demographic changes in the next century. He advised that engaging effectively with Africa necessitates an understanding of its languages and cultures to foster respectful and equitable partnerships.
The lecture also covered the educational ties between Russia and Ethiopia, highlighting the Russian House in Addis Ababa. This institution features a faculty dedicated to preparing students for admission into Russian universities and runs a program for promising specialists to gain experience in Russia. Established in October 2024, the BRICS+ Information and Cultural Media Centre’s mission is to enhance cultural, scientific, and educational cooperation between various nations.
