Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, has arranged for a Spanish company, Xcalibur Smart Mapping, to assist in the exploration of groundwater in western Kazakhstan. Aerial surveys will be conducted this year to identify water reserves. Minister Nurzhigitov is also seeking Spanish government support for the project and has secured increased water supply agreements from Uzbekistan.
A consortium of Spanish experts is set to assist Kazakhstan in the exploration of groundwater resources in its western region. This initiative follows successful negotiations by Kazakh Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Mr. Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, with the Spanish firm Xcalibur Smart Mapping, which is known for its expertise in airborne and geophysical mapping. The firm has its head office in Madrid and operates globally, including a representative office in Astana.
This year, both parties aim to conduct an airborne electromagnetic survey designed to create detailed maps and identify groundwater reserves in western Kazakhstan. The Ministry of Water Resources stated that Minister Nurzhigitov is also pursuing funding from the Spanish government to support this project, which remains under discussion.
“Experts from both sides are working on this issue. A detailed airborne electromagnetic survey will assist in detecting groundwater reserves and their boundaries,” commented Minister Nurzhigitov. In a related development, a recent report by Kursiv.media indicated that Minister Nurzhigitov has reached an agreement with Mr. Shavkat Khamrayev, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Water Resources, to increase Uzbekistan’s annual water supply to Kazakhstan by October 1 to 16 billion cubic meters. Last season, Uzbekistan supplied approximately 15 billion cubic meters of water to Kazakhstan and ensured a consistent water supply through the Dostyk Canal during the irrigation period.
In summary, a partnership between Kazakhstan and Spanish experts is set to enhance groundwater exploration in western Kazakhstan. The collaboration aims to conduct comprehensive aerial surveys, supported by potential grant funding from Spain. Additionally, Uzbekistan has committed to increasing its water supply to Kazakhstan, which underscores regional cooperation in water management.
