This rally marked the rebels’ first public event in Bukavu since they took control from government forces following a rapid advance through the region earlier this month. The rebel leadership has accused President Felix Tshisekedi’s administration of executing the assault, whereas the president has attributed the violence to an external military force operating within eastern Congo.
The rally had previously featured Corneille Nangaa, the leader of the rebel coalition that includes the Rwanda-backed M23 group. He assured listeners of the rebels’ commitment to restoring safety and security in Bukavu and announced the establishment of special units and patrol initiatives across the city.
It is reported that both Nangaa and Bertrand Bisimwa of M23 had departed prior to the eruption of violence in Bukavu’s main square. Nangaa disclosed that two suspects were arrested in connection with the assault, asserting that this “cowardly and barbaric act will not go without consequences” and emphasizing an ongoing search for additional culprits.
The rebels have progressively gained territory in eastern DR Congo since January, capturing both Bukavu and Goma, the region’s largest city. This ongoing conflict has resulted in approximately 500,000 individuals being displaced, exacerbating an already severe humanitarian situation, according to United Nations assessments.
In response to the unrest, the African Union and the UN have urged for a ceasefire and demanded the withdrawal of rebels from the territories they control. Notably, Rwanda, which had previously denied support for M23, has shifted to a defensive stance, citing security threats from skirmishes near the Congolese border.
