Somalia and Ethiopia have recently expressed enthusiasm over a military agreement between the Somali National Army (SNA) and the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF). This agreement is founded on principles of mutual respect, aiming to uphold each nation’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The pact was sanctioned following a meeting between General Odowaa Yusuf Rage and Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, which took place shortly before President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud welcomed Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Mogadishu.
In a joint statement issued after this diplomatic engagement, both countries characterized the agreement as a crucial advancement in security cooperation and regional stability. The leaders acknowledged that this development signifies a normalization of bilateral relations following a year marked by diplomatic tensions. Nevertheless, recent discussions have led to a new understanding regarding Ethiopian forces’ involvement in AUSSOM, which was initiated in January.
President Mohamud’s prominent visit to Ethiopia in January has been seen as a pivotal moment, culminating in full diplomatic representation and broader economic and security cooperation agreements. The role of Turkey as a mediator in these discussions was also highlighted. The AUSSOM mission comprises troops selected from Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Egypt, and Uganda, totaling 11,900 personnel, while challenges remain with Burundi regarding its troop contributions.
