On Sunday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced that Egypt’s Gaza reconstruction plan is prepared and will be presented at an emergency Arab summit in Cairo on Tuesday. The plan aims to ensure that Palestinians remain on their land, countering President Donald Trump’s recent proposal which sought U.S. control over Gaza and resettlement for Palestinians, a plan that has faced widespread rejection from Arab nations.
Abdelatty expressed that Egypt would pursue international support and funding for the reconstruction efforts, highlighting the significant role of Europe in financing the plan. “We will hold intensive talks with major donor countries once the plan is adopted at the upcoming Arab Summit,” he stated during a joint press conference with EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Suica.
Simultaneously, Israel has obstructed the entry of aid trucks into Gaza, escalating tensions during an already fragile ceasefire that had been in place for six weeks. Abdelatty emphasized that the weaponization of aid constitutes collective punishment and cannot be accepted, reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to sustaining the ceasefire initially agreed upon.
The expiration of the first phase of the ceasefire occurred this weekend, and Abdelatty noted that transitioning into the second phase will be challenging, yet possible with political will. Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed adherence to a proposed temporary ceasefire for the duration of Ramadan and Passover.
Following the summit, Abdelatty announced that foreign ministers from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation will convene urgently in Saudi Arabia to discuss the implementation of these plans. He stressed the importance of effectively communicating the outcomes of the Arab summit to the international community.
