Political leaders from various parties have united in honoring the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo as a significant figure of peace and patriotism. Thousands gathered at the Arap Moi Secondary School in Bartabwa, Baringo County, to pay their respects to the senator, who had a remarkable political journey serving three terms as a Member of Parliament before transitioning to the Senate.
President William Ruto, leading the government tribute, emphasized Cheptumo’s role as a peace advocate, noting a remarkable reduction in banditry by 70% in the Kerio Valley during his efforts. “He was a peacemaker and was a great resource during the 2007 negotiations that led to the grand coalition government after the post-election violence,” stated President Ruto.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi praised Cheptumo’s humility, recognizing the area’s fortune in having produced remarkable leaders like him. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula shared insights into Cheptumo’s parliamentary decorum, affirming that he was never reprimanded during his 15-year service as an MP for his conduct.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi referred to Cheptumo as a peace ambassador, highlighting the significant loss to the nation. Senator Ledama Ole Kina and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna remarked on Cheptumo’s contributions to his constituents and emphasized the importance of expediting the constitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to fill the political void left by his passing.
Majority leaders from both the Senate and National Assembly, Haron Cheruiyot and Kimani Ichungwa, acknowledged Cheptumo’s respectful and committed demeanor. They commended President Ruto’s outreach to political opponents, encouraging similar harmony among leaders. Additionally, Baringo North MP Joseph Makilap called for legislative action to officially recognize the coalition formed within the government.
Cheptumo is survived by his wife Hannah Wendot Cheptumo and their three children. Professionally a lawyer, he worked with Kenya Commercial Bank and the Central Bank of Kenya before establishing a private practice and serving as Assistant Minister for Justice and National Cohesion from 2007 to 2013.
The tributes to Senator William Cheptumo reflect a consensus on his profound impact as a peacemaker and leader dedicated to his constituents. His legacy as a respectful and humble public servant is celebrated by both political allies and adversaries. The calls for unity and exemplary service among Kenyan leaders underline the values Cheptumo embodied throughout his career.
