Ghana and MTN Group Establish Partnership to Enhance Digital Skills and AI Development

At the Mobile World Congress 2025, Ghana signed a significant MoU with MTN Group to develop AI and digital skills among its youth. This partnership supports the ‘One Million Coders’ initiative, aiming to equip young Ghanaians with essential digital skills. The MoU will facilitate collaboration for the next 12 months and enhance the country’s tech capabilities.

During the Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona, Ghana’s Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation entered into a pioneering Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MTN Group. This agreement is a significant step aimed at advancing digital skills, artificial intelligence (AI), data governance, and cybersecurity among Ghanaian youth. The MoU outlines the framework for collaboration between MTN Group, MTN Ghana, and the Ghanaian government for the coming year.

The MoU is part of the ‘One Million Coders’ initiative, a flagship program initiated by the John Romani Mahama administration. This project intends to equip Ghana’s youth with vital digital skills necessary to thrive in the competitive global technology landscape. The Ghanaian delegation highlighted their commitment to fostering AI and software development talent in the nation during the signing of the agreement.

MTN Group’s ongoing investments in Ghana, particularly through its 25th-anniversary initiatives, were acknowledged. Notably, MTN donated a building that will serve as a center of excellence dedicated to AI and software development. Hon. Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, emphasized the importance of this MoU in supporting Ghana’s AI ambitions and facilitating future collaboration.

Ralph Mupita, CEO of MTN Group, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to enhancing Ghana’s digital ecosystem. He stated, “We are very happy to support the building out of the digital ecosystem that will be a catalyst for growth and expansion to meet Ghana’s socio-economic objectives.” The focus is on developing local talent to maximize international opportunities for young Ghanaians.

The One Million Coders program is set to launch before May 7, 2025, and is designed to empower Ghana’s youth with the necessary coding and software engineering skills. Ebenezer Asante, a non-executive director at MTN Group, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s digital strategy and anticipates positive impacts on the youth and the economy.
