The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), an East African bloc, has expressed significant concern regarding the intensifying armed conflict in Nasir County, South Sudan’s Upper Nile State. In a statement issued in Juba, IGAD diplomats from member countries emphasized that the recent violence, which has resulted in over 20 casualties and numerous displacements, jeopardizes potential peace agreements.
The conflict, which began in mid-February, involves clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces and local civilian armed groups. Tensions have worsened following government announcements to deploy new troops in the region, causing fears among residents that such actions may lead to civilian targeting or disarmament campaigns.
Recent reports indicate that violence has left more than 20 individuals dead and many injured in the vicinity of Nasir, a town situated near the South Sudan-Ethiopia border. According to the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism, compliance with the peace agreement established in 2018 has significantly faltered, contributing to a deteriorating security landscape in Upper Nile State.
IGAD diplomats noted that the unrest threatens to reverse progress made under the revitalized peace agreement and worsen humanitarian conditions in the area. They stressed the critical need for all involved parties to cease hostilities and commit to adhering to the peace agreement for the benefit of the affected communities.
The situation in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State, particularly in Nasir County, has markedly deteriorated due to escalating violence between armed groups and government forces.
