Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Foreign Minister, represented King Mohammed VI at the extraordinary Arab League Summit held in Cairo on Tuesday. The summit convened at Palestine’s request to deliberate on the current developments concerning the Palestinian situation, specifically addressing the prevention of Palestinian displacement and portraying a unified Arab stance amidst various regional challenges.

The Egyptian government articulated that the summit aims to delve into the latest events regarding the Palestinian issue, particularly emphasizing the necessity of averting the displacement of Palestinians and confirming a cohesive Arab position. Additionally, discussions included the reconstruction of Gaza, maintaining the ongoing ceasefire, and pursuing legal actions to safeguard Palestinian rights.

The Moroccan delegation, which included Mohamed Ait Ouali, Morocco’s ambassador to Egypt and Abdelali El Jahid, the head of the Arab and Islamic Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated in the summit. Concurrently, Minister Bourita engaged in bilateral talks with multiple counterparts, including Badr Abdelatty from Egypt and Taher Al-Baour from Libya.

During discussions with Egyptian Foreign Minister Abdelatty, Bourita emphasized the significance of enhancing Morocco-Egypt bilateral relations and key agenda items for the summit. The urgent meeting was organized through cooperation between Egypt, the host nation, and Bahrain, the current chair of the Arab League, following consultations with member states and the League’s Secretariat.

Opening remarks were delivered by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa at the summit, which commenced around 4:00 p.m. local time. Among the pivotal topics was a response to proposals regarding Gaza’s future, as Arab leaders considered alternatives to the contentious Gaza plan proposed by Donald Trump, which advocated American control over the Palestinian territories, a plan that was widely rejected by Arab nations and Palestinians.

The extraordinary Arab League Summit highlighted Morocco’s commitment to the Palestinian cause, represented by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. With key discussions centered around Palestinian displacement and Gaza’s reconstruction, the conference sought to reinforce a unified Arab response amidst ongoing regional challenges. Collaborative efforts and bilateral meetings underscored the importance of cooperation among member states in addressing these critical issues.
