Ramdin, who previously held the position of Assistant Secretary General, is recognized as well-equipped to tackle present-day challenges while offering a novel perspective to the organization.
The election to succeed the outgoing Secretary General, Luis Almagro, is scheduled for March 10. Ramdin faces competition from Paraguayan Foreign Minister Ruben Ramirez Lezcano. Almagro’s decade-long term will officially conclude on May 25.
In a joint statement, the foreign ministries of the endorsing nations remarked, “This decision represents a significant step towards the unity of the region in the current geopolitical context and also a historic opportunity for the organization, as well as for the Caribbean region, which for the first time could lead this important space of hemispheric integration.”
The ministries further emphasized Ramdin’s extensive diplomatic experience, stating, “Minister Albert Ramdin, with his vast experience in diplomacy, including his past role as Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, is uniquely positioned to address the contemporary challenges facing our countries, bringing a fresh perspective that reflects the realities and aspirations of the Caribbean region and the Americas as a whole.”
Luis Almagro’s tenure has not been without controversy; he was embroiled in an investigation in 2022 due to allegations of an inappropriate relationship with an assistant. Additionally, questions remain regarding his involvement in Jeanine Áñez’s rise to power in Bolivia in 2019, particularly as Áñez is currently incarcerated while awaiting trial.
The endorsement of Albert Ramdin by several South American nations for the OAS Secretary General position reflects a unified approach to regional leadership and the opportunity for new representation from the Caribbean.
