He emphasized the West’s failure to adhere to their responsibilities under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), notably following the United States’ withdrawal in 2018 and the inaction of its European partners—France, Germany, and Britain—in compensating for this exit.
Naziri Asl articulated that Iran’s reduction of its commitments aligns with Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA, which permit remedial actions when other parties do not fulfill their obligations. He asserted that Iran’s nuclear strategies would only revert to compliance if sanctions by the United States and the European Union were lifted in a manner deemed effective and verifiable.
The envoy further stated, “Experience has shown that the policy of pressure pursued by certain parties is not only ineffective but also counterproductive.” He rejected any European attempts to invoke the snapback mechanism of the JCPOA, arguing that the E3 lacks the authority to do so due to their own violations of relevant international resolutions and agreements.
Naziri Asl characterized any efforts to enact the snapback mechanism as “legally baseless, unjust, and strongly rejected.” As the JCPOA’s so-called ‘Termination Day’ approaches, he urged the IAEA member states to uphold their commitments to implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which solidifies the nuclear agreement, warning against damage to years of diplomatic efforts topped with substantial investments.
In dismissal of Western accusations regarding nuclear weapons aspirations, Naziri Asl reiterated Iran’s moral stance against weapons of mass destruction, deeming them outdated and detrimental to global peace. He underscored the importance of the upcoming Termination Day, originally slated for October 2025, which signifies the lifting of remaining UN sanctions as a pivotal conclusion of the deal’s implementation.
