The agreement, endorsed by President Mozambique and other political figures, was signed during a ceremony at the Joaquim Chissano Conference Centre. Key parties such as the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), the Optimistic People for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), as well as several extra-parliamentary parties, added their support.
Despite this progress, critics noted the absence of Venâncio Mondlane, the second-place candidate in the recent elections, who has led significant opposition against the election results. Forquilha noted that the objective of the agreement is to end the instability stemming from compromised electoral justice and promote a rule of law grounded in democracy. He urged all political entities and citizens to engage in essential dialogues for a more united Mozambique.
Forquilha condemned the past instances of violence associated with post-election unrest, stating, “We cannot normalise the disruption of public order,” which threatens the daily lives of Mozambicans. The country has seen tumultuous social unrest since October, including protests by Mondlane against the election results favoring Daniel Chapo, with grievances arising from the escalating living costs.
In the wake of the unrest, reports indicate at least 353 fatalities, including minors, and numerous injuries. The government has confirmed 80 deaths and extensive damage to commercial, educational, and healthcare facilities throughout Mozambique, emphasizing the severe impact of the ongoing demonstrations.
