Former President Olusegun Obasanjo asserted on Wednesday that despite Nigeria’s current challenges, there is still hope for improvement and greatness. Celebrating his 88th birthday, he emphasized his unwavering optimism for Nigeria’s future. He stated, “I am an incurable optimist about Nigeria. Yes, the situation is bad, no doubt, but I believe that in my lifetime we will have Nigeria that we shall all be proud of.” The comments were made during the presentation of his new books, “Nigeria: Past and Future” and “Lest We Forget: Slavery, Slave Trade, Emancipation and Reparation,” at the Centre For Human Security and Dialogue in Abeokuta.

The event attracted notable figures, including state governors, former governors, and industry leaders. Obasanjo remarked on the need for Africa to liberate itself from remnants of colonialism to realize its full potential. He firmly rejected claims regarding any manipulation of his age, reaffirming his actual age as 88. He argued, “Part of our problems in Africa is what I may call residues of the slave trade, slavery and colonialism and until we can break ourselves completely away from it, we may not be able to make progress as we should do.”

Further reflecting on his new works, Obasanjo noted the importance of acknowledging past mistakes as a pathway to progress. He stated, “It is for us to see where we have all gone wrong without any exception as a group and then see if there is a way out.” He emphasized the collective duty of Nigerians to work towards an enviable nation. Obasanjo also expressed gratitude to attendees while clarifying his age and heritage, linking his birthday to a local market tradition.

Governor Dapo Abiodun praised Obasanjo as a global icon and selfless leader whose influence continues to be invaluable. A lecture delivered at the event by Prof. Eghosa Osaghae called for a re-evaluation of Nigeria’s history and culture, promoting indigenous perspectives for future development.

In a notable development, President Bola Tinubu also recognized Obasanjo on his birthday, describing him as an extraordinary leader whose controversial interventions have significantly shaped Nigeria’s governance. Tinubu highlighted Obasanjo’s critical roles throughout various transitions in Nigeria’s history, from his military service to his presidency. He expressed hope for Obasanjo’s continued strength, stating, “At 88, the former President is still gaining strength. I pray that God Almighty will grant him the grace and strength to live for more years so the nation and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom and knowledge.”
