World Athletics President Sebastian Coe expressed optimism regarding Kenya’s efforts to combat doping issues that have impacted its sports reputation. During a meeting with Kenyan officials in Nairobi, he commended the significant progress made since his last visit in January 2023, emphasizing the long-term commitment required to ensure lasting change.
Kenya has strategically invested $25 million over five years to enhance its anti-doping measures, especially following various scandals leading up to the 2016 Rio Olympics. This financial commitment has been directed towards improving anti-doping personnel, increasing testing efforts, conducting thorough investigations, and enhancing educational initiatives around doping.
Coe noted, “We are moving in the right direction,” recognizing the advances in Kenya’s anti-doping framework; however, he acknowledged that the nation is still grappling with the consequences of past doping violations. Approximately 130 Kenyan athletes, predominantly long-distance runners, have faced sanctions for doping since 2017.
In June, Kenya initiated its first lifetime ban against marathon runner Beatrice Toroitich and a six-year ban for 10km record-holder Rhonex Kipruto. Coe asserted that while the number of athletes sanctioned may rise, it signifies the effectiveness of the country’s testing protocols.
