The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) of Malawi has reported that the ongoing rainy season has significantly impacted households across the country. As of the latest update, approximately 40,178 households, equating to around 180,801 individuals, have been affected by various disasters such as storms, hailstorms, strong winds, heavy rainfall, flooding, and lightning. This reflects an increase from the prior report of 35,661 households on February 7, 2025.

The current update reveals that 809 households have been displaced due to the disasters. Furthermore, the death toll has risen from 35 to 39, with 26 fatalities attributed to lightning strikes and 13 due to damaged buildings. Tragically, among the deceased are two infants who were killed by lightning in Mzuzu City and the Nkhata Bay District. The number of recorded injuries has also increased from 469 to 483, predominantly caused by lightning and structural failures.

In response to the crisis, DoDMA has successfully provided assistance to over 80 percent of the affected households. The relief efforts include distributing essential items such as maize, beans, blankets, buckets, and plastic sheets for temporary shelter. The department has assured the public that ongoing relief operations will continue and that updates regarding the disaster situation will be regularly communicated.
