Iraq has been ranked 107th globally and 12th in the Arab world according to the Government AI Readiness Index for 2024, released by Oxford Insights. This comprehensive index evaluates AI readiness across 188 nations, utilizing 40 indicators organized into three main areas: government, technology sector, and data & infrastructure. Iraq received an overall score of 40.91, with specific scores of 32 for government readiness, 35.87 for the technology sector, and 54.25 for data and infrastructure.
In the Arab region, the United Arab Emirates leads with an impressive score of 75.66, followed by Saudi Arabia at 72, Qatar at 68, Oman at 62, and Jordan at 61. Egypt ranks sixth with 59 points, ahead of Bahrain (54), Kuwait (51), Lebanon (46), Tunisia (43), and Morocco (41). On a global scale, the United States secured the top position with a score of 87, trailed by Singapore (84) and France (79).
To improve AI integration, Iraq’s Office of the Prime Minister’s Advisor announced plans in July 2024 to formulate a national AI strategy. This strategy aims to foster knowledge-building and advance AI adoption across various sectors in the country.
Iraq’s current ranking in AI readiness reflects both challenges and opportunities for advancement in technology integration.
