Nahid Islam, a prominent leader and sociology graduate, announced the establishment of the National Citizens Party (NCP), emphasizing the need for substantial reforms abandoned by the existing political structure.
Nahid Islam, 27, previously led the Students Against Discrimination movement, which culminated in Hasina’s departure after 15 years of authoritarian rule. Resigning from the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, he expressed disappointment at the lack of commitment from political leaders to the reforms for which many students sacrificed their lives.
The uprising resulted in over 800 fatalities, and Nahid himself faced imprisonment during the protests. Despite stepping away from a politically neutral interim administration, he believes in the emergence of a new political force with the potential for significant influence in the future, particularly as elections approach.
Elections are anticipated by March of the coming year, with forecasts suggesting a probable victory for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). However, Nahid and his associates remain determined to promote their vision of governance and societal improvement, stating, “Our target is to sustain this energy for another 50 or 100 or more years.”
