Ethiopia observed International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8, 2025, under the theme “Rapid and Sustainable Comprehensive Change through Women’s Participation.” The principal event occurred in Koye Feche Sub-city, Sheger City, attended by Ergoge Tesfaye, Minister of Women and Social Affairs, along with government officials and key stakeholders.
In addition to the main celebration, Gambella city hosted an event attended by regional government officials and Meskerem Abebe, Vice President of the Prosperity Party’s Women’s Wing. Meskerem stressed the vital roles women hold in leadership, diplomatic efforts, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding.
The Vice President acknowledged significant advancements in women’s rights, addressing sexual violence, and enhancing women’s participation in economic, social, and leadership sectors. Ariat Ujulu, Head of the Gambella Regional State Women and Social Affairs Bureau, highlighted the region’s achievements in women’s empowerment.
Ariat noted past harmful traditional practices as obstacles to women’s potential; however, current initiatives are now aimed at protecting them from violence and fostering their involvement in development processes. She praised the current leadership for enhancing women’s presence in decision-making and successful initiatives like Lemat Trust and peacebuilding programs.
International Women’s Day celebrations also extended to Mekelle city in the Tigray region, featuring participation from federal, regional, and local leaders and stakeholders. This year marks the 114th global celebration and the 49th national observance of International Women’s Day, celebrated through diverse programs and activities.
