Women in Guernsey are being encouraged to participate in upcoming elections due to low female representation (20%) compared to Jersey (43%). Women in Public Life (WiPL) aims to enhance this by offering a free Train to Campaign program. Chairperson Shelaine Green emphasizes the necessity for women’s voices in governmental decisions and invites female candidates to seek support.
Women in Guernsey are being encouraged to consider running for the upcoming election. The voluntary group, Women in Public Life (WiPL), highlights that female representation in the States stands at around 20%, significantly lower than the 43% representation in Jersey’s States Assembly. Chairperson Shelaine Green remarked on the concerning status of Guernsey, noting its position just above Saudi Arabia and Turkey in female government representation.
Ms. Green stated, “Without better representation, the views and life experiences of women are not being heard when crucial decisions are taken that affect everyone in the island.” She also pointed out that Guernsey would be ranked 123rd if it were part of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s monthly ranking for women in national parliaments. For context, the UK Parliament holds 26th place with 40.5% female representation.
The chair emphasized that the chances of success for women standing for election are equal to those of men, advocating for increased female candidates. To facilitate this, WiPL is offering a free programme named Train to Campaign on 23 March, designed to enhance campaigning skills.
Furthermore, Ms. Green urged potential candidates to engage with the group, stating, “If you’re a woman thinking of standing in June 2025, talk to us. We can help you get up to speed on current issues, understand the election process and plan your campaign. And give you moral support – your island needs you.”
The call for increased female representation in Guernsey’s government is essential to ensuring that women’s voices are heard in decision-making processes. Women in Public Life is actively promoting participation by offering programs and support, highlighting that women have an equal opportunity for success in elections. The initiative underscores the importance of having more women candidates in the upcoming election, set for June 2025, to create a more balanced representation that reflects the entire community.
