The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced a significant increase in the cost per meal for children enrolled in the School Feeding Programme. This update raises the cost from GH¢1.50 to GH¢2, reflecting a notable 33% adjustment. This policy, which was first initiated by the Mahama administration, is aimed at improving the financial support for children’s meals in schools.
Speaking during an X Space session hosted by KalyJay, Dr. Forson remarked on the inadequacy of the current meal allowance, stating, “Currently, the government of Ghana pays GH¢1.50 per child per day. Unfortunately, we all agree that this amount is too small and can’t even buy one egg.”
The Finance Minister further indicated that the increase will be correlated to inflation, ensuring that the amount remains viable for providing nourishing meals. “In the budget, we will be increasing this modestly to an appreciable limit, so you should expect to see some increase,” he continued.
Historically, the cost per meal adjusted from GH¢1 to GH¢1.20 under the previous administration. The Ghana School Feeding Programme serves to nourish the minds of the future, with approximately 3.8 million children participating in 2023. This initiative aims to enhance school enrollment, combat hunger, and promote better nutrition among students.
