Rubio Travels to Saudi Arabia for U.S.-Ukraine Peace Negotiations

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio travels to Saudi Arabia for talks on the U.S.-Ukraine conflict, focusing on peace negotiations amid ongoing Russian attacks. He will meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and discuss shared interests. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy may attend initial discussions while a Ukrainian delegation is set to engage with U.S. officials to establish a framework for peace. Rubio will subsequently participate in the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Canada.

Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, will be arriving in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Monday for talks concerning the ongoing U.S.-Ukraine conflict. President Donald Trump is eager to facilitate a prompt resolution to the war between Russia and Ukraine, even as Russian forces intensify their aerial assaults on Ukraine’s energy facilities.

During his visit, Rubio plans to engage with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud to discuss mutual interests and the strengthening of the U.S.-Saudi relationship, as stated by State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.

Rubio has emphasized to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha the administration’s commitment to achieving a sustainable peace promptly. This commitment was reiterated in a recent communication on Friday.

On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will arrive in Riyadh to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman; however, his participation in the subsequent U.S. talks may not take place. Ukrainian officials, led by Zelenskyy’s Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak, will instead engage in discussions with U.S. representatives including Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz on Tuesday.

A senior State Department official remarked that Ukrainian officials are eager to engage in talks, indicating their readiness to progress in negotiations. The primary objective of these discussions will be to establish a framework for a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire.

These talks follow discussions held by senior U.S. officials with Russian counterparts in Saudi Arabia three weeks prior. Ukraine has expressed its readiness for constructive dialogue with U.S. officials to outline necessary decisions and strategies.

President Zelenskyy emphasized the urgency of establishing peace in a post on X, noting that Ukraine had remained committed to achieving peace from the outset of the conflict.

After his stay in Saudi Arabia, Rubio will continue to Charlevoix, Canada, for the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers’ meeting from March 12 to 14. G7 officials have reiterated their dedication to fostering a durable peace and establishing security guarantees for Ukraine.

They have also stated that any future sanctions against Russia should depend on their commitment to genuine efforts aimed at resolving the conflict with Ukraine.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has embarked on a diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia, engaging with both Saudi leadership and Ukrainian officials to advance talks aimed at resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The emphasis on establishing a framework for peace, coupled with President Zelenskyy’s commitment to constructive dialogue, highlights the urgency for a sustainable resolution. Following these discussions, Rubio is set to join the G7 foreign ministers, continuing the dialogue for security and peace in the region.
