Namibia’s SWAPO party has appointed Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as its first female leader during its extraordinary congress. Political Analyst Rui Tyitende explained the reasons behind the congress timing and highlighted the vacancy in the vice presidency. Namibia’s ruling party, the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), has appointed Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as its new leader, marking a significant milestone as she is the first woman to hold this position in the party’s 65-year history. The announcement was made during SWAPO’s sixth extraordinary congress, convened at the Windhoek Country Club Resort.
The decision to organize the congress months after the national general election was a subject of scrutiny. However, Namibian Political Analyst Rui Tyitende clarified that the event was prompted by the passing of former President Hage Geingob. He noted, “Geingob died last year in February as the head of the party, and as per the party’s constitution, they ought to have held an extraordinary congress within three months after his death.”
Although the congress saw Nandi-Ndaitwah declared as president, the position of vice president remains unfilled. Tyitende explained, “As we speak, there is no vice president of the party… That perhaps speaks to the underlying divisions within the party as to whether they should have a candidate for that position.”
Challenging Nandi-Ndaitwah for the presidency was deemed politically imprudent. Tyitende asserted, “It would be political suicide for anyone to challenge her for the position of President… so if you’re a member of the Central Committee or Politburo and challenge her, you are automatically excluding yourself from possible appointments.”
No new appointments were made at the congress aside from endorsing Nandi-Ndaitwah. “There were no new positions… The Secretary General remains the same, the Deputy Secretary General remains the same, and the position of vice president remains vacant.”
The status of the Vice President position is still pending. Tyitende remarked, “The Central Committee will convene soon to decide what they are going to do.” It appears that the absence of competition for this role aims to prevent internal divisions within the party as they prepare for upcoming regional and local elections.
In 2027, SWAPO plans to hold its ordinary congress where all positions, including that of the president, will be contested. Tyitende elaborated, “In 2027, when the ordinary congress takes place, it will be back to the drawing board for all of them.”
