Cuba secured its first victory at the women’s world boxing championship with Melani Girado winning by default against Tanzanian Halima Vunjabei. Coaches Ivan Sadiel Horta del Rey and Santiago Suarez lead the team, which includes Yoana Rodriguez and Dayira Mesa, preparing for their upcoming matches.
The Cuban women’s boxing team achieved a historic milestone by securing a victory in their inaugural participation at the women’s world boxing championship. Melani Girado, competing in the 57 kg category, triumphed over her initial opponent, Tanzanian boxer Halima Vunjabei, who did not appear for the match held in Nis, Serbia.
Following this victory, Girado is poised to confront the winner of an upcoming bout between Uzbekistan’s Nigina Uktamova and Georgia’s Kasumova. Cuba has also registered two more athletes, Yoana Rodriguez in the 81 kg category and Dayira Mesa in the 75 kg category, who are set to compete under the guidance of coaches Ivan Sadiel Horta del Rey and Santiago Suarez.
Rodriguez and Mesa are scheduled to fight Uzbekistan’s Sokhiba Ruzmetova and Russia’s Anastasia Shamonova, respectively. The coaching duo expressed their commitment, emphasizing that despite the late introduction of women’s boxing in Cuba, they are embracing this challenge enthusiastically, backed by the support of the National Commission and a cohesive team effort.
In summary, Cuba’s women’s boxing team made a commendable debut at the world championship, highlighted by Melani Girado’s victory due to her opponent’s absence. As the competition progresses, fellow boxers Yoana Rodriguez and Dayira Mesa are ready to represent the nation in their respective categories, with strong support from their coaches. This endeavor highlights the growing commitment to women’s boxing in Cuba.
