Ritu Moni returns to the Bangladesh squad for the Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Lahore, with significant changes including notable absentees like Murshida Khatun. Jannatul Ferdus and uncapped Ishma Tanjim join the team. The competition runs from April 5-19, featuring teams competing for World Cup spots.
The Bangladesh women’s cricket team has announced its squad for the Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Lahore, welcoming back experienced allrounder Ritu Moni. Moni last participated in an ODI against Ireland in December 2022. The team has seen four alterations from the previous squad that faced the West Indies in January, with notable absentees, including Murshida Khatun, Lata Mondal, Sultana Khatun, and Taj Nehar.
Murshida Khatun, who struggled during the last series, scored only 53 runs in three ODIs, while Sultana Khatun, with limited contributions, picked up merely two wickets from one ODI and three T20Is. Both Mondal and Nehar only participated in T20s without significant impact. In contrast, Jannatul Ferdus returns to the ODI format after her last appearance in 2018 and Ishma Tanjim has earned her debut after impressive performances in the Women’s Dhaka Premier League.
Ishma Tanjim had an outstanding season, scoring 336 runs in seven matches, while Ferdus emerged as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 21 wickets, and Moni secured the second position with 18 wickets. The competition in Lahore is set for April 5-19, where Bangladesh competes against West Indies, Ireland, Scotland, Thailand, and host nation Pakistan for two World Cup spots.
The squad comprises Nigar Sultana (captain), Nahida Akter, Ishma Tanjim, Dilara Akter, Sharmin Akter, Sobhana Mostary, Shorna Akter, Jannatul Ferdus, Rabeya Khan, Fahima Khatun, Fariha Islam, Farzana Haque, Shanjida Akther, Marufa Akter, and Ritu Moni.
The Bangladesh women’s cricket team is preparing for the Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Lahore, significantly bolstered by the return of Ritu Moni and the inclusion of Jannatul Ferdus and Ishma Tanjim. The squad has seen notable omissions following a disappointing performance against the West Indies. The team aims to secure one of the two available positions for the World Cup later this year, competing against several established teams.
