During this virtual event, Prime Minister Modi announced that India and Mauritius have reached new heights in developmental cooperation and capacity building, while also introducing several significant initiatives.
The projects inaugurated included the Cap Malheureux Area Health Centre and 20 High Impact Community Development Projects, further emphasizing the collaboration between both nations in health and infrastructure. The new institute, funded through a US$ 4.74 million grant as per the 2017 Memorandum of Understanding, aims to enhance the training of Mauritian civil servants across various governmental sectors.
Prime Minister Modi listed new initiatives to bolster the partnership between India and Mauritius. These initiatives encompass the construction of a new Parliament building in Mauritius—termed a gift from India, as well as plans to modernize a 100-kilometer water pipeline and the launch of additional community development projects worth 500 million Mauritian Rupees. Furthermore, 500 civil servants from Mauritius will receive training in India over the next five years.
Highlighting the enduring relationship, Prime Minister Modi stated, “The ties between India and Mauritius are not only bound by the Indian Ocean, but also by our shared culture, traditions, and values.” He acknowledged mutual support in times of need, such as during natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic. Modi noted the various infrastructures completed with Indian support, including the Metro Express, Supreme Court Building, social housing projects, an ENT hospital, UPI and RuPay card systems, and Jan Aushadhi Kendras.
Concluding his remarks, Prime Minister Modi mentioned the enhanced air and sea connectivity in Agaléga Island, which allowed for rapid humanitarian assistance during Cyclone Chido, stating that it saved many lives.
The inaugurated projects and new initiatives reflect a sustained commitment between India and Mauritius towards developmental cooperation and capacity building. Key initiatives include the construction of public infrastructures, training programs for civil servants, and improved healthcare services.
