Egypt and Jordan Endorse Trump’s Statement on Palestinian Residency in Gaza

President Trump stated that Palestinians will not be expelled from Gaza, which was welcomed by Egypt and Jordan. This comes after previous proposals suggested displacing residents to these countries. The PLO and Hamas appreciated Trump’s comments while Arab states proposed a substantial reconstruction plan for Gaza.

Egypt and Jordan have expressed approval of United States President Donald Trump’s recent remarks indicating that Palestinians would not be expelled from the Gaza Strip. Uncertainty remains regarding whether this statement signifies a modification of Trump’s previous proposal from February, which suggested US oversight in Gaza and the removal of Palestinian residents to Jordan and Egypt, a proposal both countries categorically rejected.

During a press conference at the White House, President Trump remarked, “Nobody will expel the Palestinians,” following an inquiry about discussions of Palestinian expulsion during his meeting with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin. Egypt’s foreign ministry conveyed its appreciation for Trump’s affirmation of the Palestinian residents’ right to remain in Gaza.

Jordan’s foreign ministry also welcomed Trump’s statements, emphasizing the necessity for a just and lasting peace in accordance with the principles of a two-state solution. Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem noted that the apparent change in Trump’s position has been positively received in Gaza.

The secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Hussein al-Sheikh, expressed gratitude for Trump’s comments, highlighting the reassurance that Gaza’s inhabitants are not to be displaced from their homeland. Meanwhile, Arab states have proposed an alternative to expulsion, spearheaded by Egypt, which includes a $53 billion budget for the reconstruction of Gaza, ravaged by 15 months of conflict with Israel, along with a framework for future governance in the region.

This alternative plan was officially adopted by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation on Saturday and has garnered support from several European nations, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy.

In summary, Egypt and Jordan have positively received President Trump’s remarks asserting that Palestinians will not be expelled from the Gaza Strip. This marks a potential shift in his position regarding US involvement in Gaza. The PLO and Hamas have also expressed appreciation for this stance. Furthermore, an alternative reconstruction plan put forth by Arab states aims to address the region’s needs after the protracted conflict, receiving international backing.
