Artillery shelling in El Fasher, North Darfur, attributed to the RSF, has claimed the lives of 10 civilians, including five children. The SAF reports significant military exchanges, including downing drones and targeting RSF operations. Citizens express concern over rising looting and violence amidst ongoing military actions.
Recent artillery shelling in El Fasher, North Darfur, reportedly by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has resulted in the deaths of 10 civilians, including five children, according to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). This incident is part of escalating hostilities in the region, characterized by severe artillery and drone exchanges among the warring factions.
The SAF reported that the shelling on Wednesday specifically targeted young children under six years of age, with four women also sustaining serious injuries, necessitating medical treatment. The local populace remains in a state of anxiety and tension following these attacks.
On another note, the SAF’s 6th Infantry Division achieved a significant milestone by shooting down seven drones over El Fasher on Monday. The division highlighted the launch of 40 drones and 50 artillery shells aimed at the city, and stated that they have downed over 100 drones within a span of 10 days, calling for international regulations regarding unmanned aerial vehicles.
The shelling by the RSF on Tuesday led to 10 civilian deaths, inclusive of a girl, and injured 23 others. The SAF countered with its own drone operations against strategic locations and reported the destruction of RSF equipment, including vital vehicles.
Furthermore, the 6th Infantry Division targeted an RSF supply convoy, destroying a tractor vehicle and reportedly killing eight RSF members. Concurrent operations by Special Action Forces and the Joint Reserve resulted in the capture of combat vehicles and thwarted attempts of attacks. The armed forces reported the destruction of additional vehicles and a tractor truck loaded with armaments.
Despite regained control over several neighborhoods, increased incidents of looting have been reported which citizens have urged authorities to address. Meanwhile, the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) accused the RSF of committing atrocities against civilians in the vicinity of Tawila locality, amidst systematic looting and arson. These accounts remain difficult to verify due to the lack of responses from the contending forces regarding inquiries about military operations.
The ongoing conflict in North Darfur, marked by the tragic loss of civilian lives and the involvement of various military factions, has prompted urgent calls for intervention. With the Sudanese Armed Forces reportedly achieving progress against the RSF and confronting rising crime in recently liberated areas, the situation remains precarious. Furthermore, the allegations of violence against civilians underscore the need for accountability and humanitarian aid in the region.
