US Ambassador Nicole Theriot reiterated US support for Guyana against Venezuelan aggression regarding the Essequibo region. Following a naval incursion by Venezuela, Guyana has requested provisional measures from the International Court of Justice and is wary of potential internal subversion as tensions escalate.
On Thursday, US Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot reaffirmed the US government’s robust support for Guyana amidst ongoing Venezuelan aggression in the Essequibo region. She stated, “We support Guyana 100 percent against this aggression; it is unacceptable and we won’t allow Venezuela to threaten Guyana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and so we are standing with many other international partners.” Theriot emphasized that the United States will always stand in solidarity with Guyana to defend its rights.
The recent Venezuelan naval incursion on March 1, 2025, has resulted in widespread condemnation from both regional and international allies of Guyana. In reaction to the increasing tensions, Guyana has requested provisional measures from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), particularly in light of Venezuela’s plans to conduct elections on May 25, one day before Guyana’s 59th Independence celebrations. These elections are intended to appoint officials in the Essequibo region, which is seen as a direct challenge to Guyana’s sovereignty.
Robeson Benn, the Minister of Home Affairs, indicated that the authorities are vigilant regarding the presence of Venezuelan ‘sleepers’—individuals acting as secret agents—in Guyana. He cautioned that anyone supporting Venezuela’s electoral initiatives to govern the Essequibo region may face treason charges for their actions, highlighting the gravity of the situation for national security.
The US has expressed unwavering support for Guyana in the face of Venezuelan aggression, particularly concerning the disputed Essequibo region. With plans for Venezuelan elections that are perceived as a challenge to Guyana’s sovereignty, the country is seeking international legal protection while remaining vigilant against internal threats. The situation underscores the complex geopolitics in the region and the importance of international alliances for national integrity.
