The African Union expressed concern over the Tigray situation, urging restraint and dialogue among parties. It emphasized adherence to the COHA signed in November 2022 as vital for peace, and pledged support for its implementation. The AU aims to continue facilitating cooperation and dialogue while promoting broader development goals in Africa.
On March 12, 2025, the African Union (AU) issued a press statement expressing deep concern regarding the situation involving the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The AU emphasized the critical need for stability and peace in the region, urging all parties to exercise restraint and engage in constructive dialogue to resolve their differences.
In light of recent developments, the AU strongly advocates for adherence to the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA) established between the TPLF and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Pretoria in November 2022. The AU underscored the importance of this agreement for maintaining peace and fostering conditions conducive to sustainable development and reconciliation.
Moreover, the AU reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to supporting the implementation of the COHA, pledging to accompany the parties throughout the peace process. The AU, in collaboration with the High-Level Panel, expressed readiness to facilitate ongoing dialogue and cooperation among the involved stakeholders.
The AU Commission envisions an integrated continent politically unified by the principles of Pan-Africanism to achieve sustainable development. Additionally, it highlighted the cooperation with the GIZ project aimed at addressing migration and displacement issues, as well as stressing the global challenge posed by violent extremism and the ambitions outlined in Agenda 2063, Africa’s comprehensive development framework for the next fifty years.
The African Union remains committed to promoting peace and stability in the Tigray region. By encouraging adherence to the COHA and facilitating ongoing dialogue, the AU aims to foster a peaceful resolution and support socio-economic development in the region. The organization’s efforts reflect a broader commitment to Pan-African unity and sustainable development as articulated in Agenda 2063.
