Tropical Cyclone Jude has tragically resulted in nine fatalities across Mozambique and Malawi. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) reported six deaths, 20 injuries, and the displacement of 9,525 individuals in northern Mozambique’s Nampula and Niasa provinces, as well as the central Zambezia province.
In Malawi, an additional three deaths were confirmed, with approximately 20,000 individuals rendered homeless in the cyclone’s southern region, where it caused severe flooding. Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, noted that those displaced are being accommodated in evacuation centers.
Cyclone Jude made landfall in northern Mozambique on Sunday and subsequently moved to southern Malawi, leading to extensive flooding from Monday through Wednesday. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), relief efforts are challenged by damaged roads and bridges, obstructing access to affected areas.
In December, Cyclone Chido similarly impacted both nations, resulting in 73 fatalities in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of these regions to severe weather events.
