In Malawi, the cyclone has claimed three lives, with around 20,000 people left homeless in the southern region due to severe flooding. Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, indicated that the displaced individuals are currently being provided shelter in evacuation centers.
The cyclone initially made landfall in northern Mozambique early Sunday and subsequently moved towards southern Malawi, where heavy flooding persisted from Monday through Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has noted that relief efforts are being hindered due to washed-away roads and bridges, complicating access.
This natural disaster follows the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in December of the previous year, which resulted in 73 deaths in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi, highlighting an ongoing vulnerability to such weather events in the region.
