Uzbekistan’s Textbooks Promote Tolerance and Jewish History: Report Findings

IMPACT-se’s recent report reveals that Uzbekistan’s textbooks depict a balanced view of Judaism, acknowledge the Holocaust, and recognize Israel’s economic achievements. The study emphasizes Uzbekistan’s role in promoting tolerance and countering Islamism, showcasing its educational model as an example of moderation in Central Asia.

On Thursday, IMPACT-se, an international research institute based in Israel, published a report analyzing how Jews, Judaism, Israel, and the Arab-Israeli conflict are represented in Uzbekistan’s educational textbooks. This research constitutes the second part of a three-part series that evaluates the curricula in Central Asia, in collaboration with the Ruderman Family Foundation, which also encompasses Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.

The findings indicate that Uzbek textbooks present a positive and well-rounded perspective of Judaism, recognizing Jewish practices, history, the impact of the Holocaust, and Israel’s economic progress. Additionally, significant emphasis is placed on classifying Hamas and Hezbollah as radical Islamist organizations.

Dr. Zeev Levin, the study leader, assessed 130 textbooks from Uzbekistan’s national curriculum, noting the nation’s dedication to fostering mutual respect and understanding among its diverse population. This report illustrates how Uzbekistan plays a key role in combating Islamism through its education system.

Jay Ruderman, president of the Ruderman Family Foundation, commended the report for showcasing Uzbekistan’s commitment to tolerance, while Marcus Sheff, CEO of IMPACT-se, characterized the country’s educational model as a notable example of moderation within the region.

In conclusion, the report by IMPACT-se highlights Uzbekistan’s educational initiatives that promote tolerance and a balanced representation of Jewish history within its textbooks. This initiative illustrates the nation’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, as it counters radical ideologies through its approach to education. The positive portrayal of Judaism and critical stance on extremist organizations reflect a significant step towards nurturing understanding among diverse communities.
