Iran President Commends Landmark Peace Treaty Between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian congratulated Armenia and Azerbaijan on their peace treaty, highlighting Iran’s commitment to regional stability. The agreement ends decades of conflict over Karabakh, a region recognized as part of Azerbaijan. Both leaders expressed optimism about the treaty’s implementation and the strengthening of ties between Armenia and Iran.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed his support for the newly established peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, emphasizing Iran’s dedication to fostering regional peace and stability. In a recent telephone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Pezeshkian congratulated both nations on this significant achievement. He stated, “Iran has always welcomed the establishment of peace, convergence and stability in the region, especially among the neighbors, while preserving the territorial integrity of countries.”

The peace agreement, reached on Thursday, is intended to conclude nearly four decades of hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with Armenia officially renouncing its claims to the contested region of Karabakh. This area has been focal in two major conflicts—one in 2020 and another in the 1990s. Notably, the region is recognized internationally as a part of Azerbaijan, which reclaimed it through a swift military offensive.

Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, hailed this announcement as “a necessary and important step” toward achieving sustained peace in the South Caucasus. During his dialogue with Pezeshkian, the Prime Minister of Armenia updated him on the finalized draft of the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan” and acknowledged Iran’s support for this treaty.

Pashinyan reiterated his commitment to further negotiations aimed at realizing the peace agreement and enhancing regional relations. He expressed optimism that both countries would soon sign the treaty and praised the Iranian administration for its role in bolstering mutual ties, indicating Armenia’s readiness to follow through on its agreements with Iran.

In conclusion, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s endorsement of the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan reflects Iran’s ongoing commitment to regional stability. The agreement aims to resolve longstanding disputes and has received positive reactions from Iranian officials. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan are keen to implement the treaty, marking a hopeful step toward lasting peace in the South Caucasus region.
