Leicestershire County Cricket Club has announced the signing of Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood on an all-format deal for the 2025 season. The 35-year-old cricketer, approaching 12,000 runs in first-class cricket, will join club captain Peter Handscomb and Netherlands’ Logan van Beek as the overseas players for the upcoming campaign. Masood is expected to arrive at Uptonsteel County Ground after the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in mid-May, aligning himself with his new teammates before the Vitality Blast opener on May 31.

Having made his debut in 2007, Shan Masood has established himself as an accomplished run-scorer with over 22,000 career runs, which includes 45 centuries, among which highlights a remarkable 239 against Sussex in 2022. His average in first-class cricket is nearly 40, and he has also shown prowess in limited-overs formats, boasting a strike rate of 125.3 in T20s and averaging above 52 in List A matches.

In addition to his 70 caps for Pakistan, Masood brings considerable county experience—having performed outstandingly in his debut season with Derbyshire in 2022 with a remarkable tally of 1,832 runs from 28 matches. His subsequent tenure as captain of Yorkshire culminated in the team’s promotion to Division One last summer, showcasing his leadership abilities.

In a statement regarding his new role, Masood expressed, “I am really excited to have the chance to play all three formats for Leicestershire. I have always admired the Club and have had great conversations with a lot of the team during the last three seasons.” He further noted, “I love playing at Uptonsteel County Ground. The fans get behind the team in strong numbers, and the games I have been a part of have always been a great spectacle. It is an exciting time to join the Foxes.”

Director of Cricket Claude Henderson remarked on Masood’s signing, stating, “We are delighted to welcome someone of Shan’s calibre to Leicestershire. He is a proven talent both internationally and in county cricket, and someone who can win matches in all three formats. His leadership and experience will be invaluable to the team both on and off the pitch.”

Shan Masood’s signing with Leicestershire County Cricket Club marks an important addition to their squad for the 2025 season. His extensive experience and proven run-scoring ability will bolster the team in all formats of the game. With strong leadership skills and successful past performances, Masood is anticipated to make a significant impact. His enthusiasm for joining the club, alongside the support from fans, highlights a promising future for both him and Leicestershire in upcoming competitions.
