Aichetou Taffa, Director of Agricultural Investment and Export Promotion at the National Society for Rural Development, articulates this vision.

“There is a strong interest in agricultural investment in Mauritania,” states Aichetou. “Our country possesses abundant arable land, significant water reserves, and a varied climate that supports diverse crops. The government, alongside Sonader, is actively working to lay the groundwork and welcome investors into Mauritania.”

Historically, Mauritania has gained recognition in the international fresh produce sector, particularly for its watermelons, which are among the first to reach European markets each season. “This experience has been beneficial, with local stakeholders in the watermelon and melon sectors leading the export of fresh produce and paving the way for other products,” Aichetou explains. He also emphasizes that Mauritania has the potential to become a reliable source for other high-demand market products like early vegetables and fruits.

Aichetou Taffa expresses that horticulture is a top priority for Mauritania due to its critical role in ensuring domestic food security. Nonetheless, as the local market remains limited, there is a pressing need for export opportunities. “We aim to position ourselves globally alongside countries like Morocco and Egypt, which have similar agricultural advantages,” he remarks.

Notably, significant progress has been made in Mauritania’s agricultural sector aimed at export. “The port of Nouakchott is undergoing substantial enhancements, while Sonader has successfully reclaimed tens of thousands of hectares of arable land,” Aichetou shares. Initiatives also include training growers and their cooperatives, as well as promoting Mauritanian exporters at major trade fairs such as Fruit Logistica and Fruit Attraction.

To date, investors from countries such as Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, France, and Sudan have engaged in fresh produce cultivation in Mauritania. “We are making preparations for additional growers and facilitating a robust platform for exporters. This initiative is augmented by identifying priority sectors where technological contribution and expertise are paramount,” concludes Aichetou.
