Israel Expands Military Operations in Gaza: New Security Zone Established

The IDF is increasing military efforts in the southern Gaza Strip by creating a new security zone between Rafah and Egypt. This expansion aims to enhance control over the area, with ongoing operations focused on dismantling Hamas infrastructure. Negotiations for a ceasefire continue amidst renewed conflict, with Hamas reaffirming their stance against surrendering arms.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are expanding their operations in the southern Gaza Strip by establishing a new security zone between the city of Rafah and the Egypt border, as reported by Bloomberg. This initiative involves the extension of the Morag Corridor, which connects Rafah to the Philadelphi Corridor, situated along the Egypt border. Currently, this entire area is designated as part of Israel’s security zone.

IDF spokesperson Avichai Adrei revealed that the military exerts control over approximately one-third of the Gaza Strip, which they designate as a “defensive security zone.” The forthcoming expansion of ground operations will be adjusted based on the prevailing operational conditions. The IDF intends to eliminate Hamas infrastructure located both above and below the ground.

Following a truce that concluded in January 2025, the hostilities between Israel and Hamas resumed on March 2, only six weeks after the ceasefire. The current IDF ground operation focuses on enlarging the security zone near Rafah, thereby renewing tensions in the region. Amid increased military activity, there is speculation regarding a potential full-scale occupation of Gaza as Israel seeks to pressure Hamas for the release of hostages.

Representative Mahmoud Mardawi denounced negotiations that entail the surrender of arms by Hamas, affirming that the group remains steadfast in retaining its weapons. He indicated that Hamas is ready to respond to Israel’s proposal through international mediators. On April 15, Hamas refused an Israeli offer which demanded militants exit the enclave in exchange for a continuation of the hostage exchange negotiations. Ongoing discussions involving the United States, Qatar, and Egypt aim to broker a new ceasefire agreement.

The IDF’s operations in the southern Gaza Strip, including the establishment of a new security zone, reflect a significant escalation of hostilities in the region. As military actions intensify, the situation remains complex, with ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire influenced by the challenging dynamics of hostage release and the demilitarization of Hamas. The refusal of Hamas to relinquish arms underscores the ongoing tensions and obstacles to achieving a lasting resolution.
