MEA Condemns Pakistan’s Habitual Misuse of OIC Ahead of Modi’s Saudi Visit

The MEA has condemned Pakistan’s longstanding misuse of the OIC as a habitual practice. Foreign Secretary Misri criticized Pakistan’s actions, labelling them as “shenanigans”. This statement comes prior to Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, signaling a strengthening partnership between India and Saudi Arabia.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has criticized Pakistan for its ongoing misuse of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), describing it as a longstanding habit. Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra emphasized that India has consistently opposed these actions and raised concerns with various OIC member states.

Kwatra referred to Pakistan’s actions as “shenanigans,” noting that there is a shared understanding among OIC members regarding Pakistan’s habitual tactics. He affirmed India’s commitment to highlighting these issues and ensuring that other nations are aware of Pakistan’s recurrent attempts within the OIC framework.

The OIC serves as the second-largest intergovernmental organization after the United Nations, representing 57 member countries across multiple continents. It aims to safeguard Muslim interests and promote global peace and harmony.

Misri’s comments come in advance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Saudi Arabia on April 22 and 23, following an invitation from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This marks Modi’s first visit to Saudi Arabia during his current term, having previously traveled to the nation in 2016 and 2019.

This visit is significant as it occurs shortly after Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s state visit to New Delhi in September 2023, during which the two leaders co-chaired the inaugural meeting of the India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council. According to Misri, this upcoming visit underscores the strengthening partnership between India and Saudi Arabia.

In summary, the MEA’s criticism of Pakistan’s misuse of the OIC highlights ongoing diplomatic strains. Foreign Secretary Misri emphasized India’s awareness and response to these issues, particularly in the context of India’s relations with Saudi Arabia. The upcoming visit of Prime Minister Modi reflects the deepening ties between the two nations.
