The Lake Chad region is undergoing a severe humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by a mix of conflict and instability. Climate change is intensifying existing political, environmental, economic, and security issues, making the security situation even more precarious. With rising temperatures and erratic rainfall, communities are struggling to maintain their livelihoods, while ongoing conflicts between armed groups and government forces further heighten their vulnerability and erode traditional coping mechanisms.
This article shares findings from a locally grounded climate-security nexus assessment in the Lake Chad region, aimed at informing potential responses. The analysis is based on 229 interviews conducted by a local research team, providing insights into the ways in which climate change interacts with already fragile security landscapes. The study evaluates the influence of climate change on risks in the region and identifies appropriate strategies for addressing these challenges.
The assessment reveals four specific climate-fragility risks: 1) Climate and ecological shifts are leading to heightened livelihood insecurity; 2) Increased vulnerability arises as conflict and fragility weaken coping mechanisms; 3) Resource conflicts escalate due to scarcity; and 4) Economic instability and livelihood insecurity drive recruitment into armed groups. The article posits that effective stabilization efforts in the region must integrate considerations of climate-related risks to achieve lasting peace.
