According to Check Point Software Technologies’ Global Threat Index for December 2024, cybercrime sophistication continues to rise in Africa, with eight countries identified in the top 20 most attacked regions. Ethiopia ranks first with a Normalised Risk Index of 98.2%, highlighting its vulnerability.
The following African countries are among the top 20 most targeted: Uganda is 8th with a Normalised Risk Index of 68.2; Angola follows at 9th with 66.2; Ghana is in 11th place with 62.7; and Nigeria is 13th with 62.3. Notably, Kenya has moved from 20th to 17th position, whereas Mozambique ranks 18th, and Cote d’Ivoire rounds out the list at 20th with a score of 55.6.
The December report indicates a shift towards ransomware threats, particularly from FunkSec, a prominent ransomware-as-a-service operator employing Artificial Intelligence. FunkSec has become a leading force among double-extortion groups, claiming responsibility for 14% of attacks in December, although many of its assertions lack verification.
In addition to FunkSec, the malware family FakeUpdates persists as the predominant global threat, impacting 5% of organizations, with AgentTesla and Androxgh0st affecting 3% each. FakeUpdates, also termed SocGholish, functions as a downloader, while AgentTesla focuses on capturing sensitive credentials.
