The 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), published by Transparency International, reveals that Denmark retains its position as the least corrupt nation for the second consecutive year, achieving a near-perfect score of 90. Following Denmark are Finland, Singapore, and New Zealand in the rankings. Unfortunately, India’s ranking has declined to 96th from 93rd, reflecting a worsening combat against corruption, as demonstrated by its score of 38 out of 100.
The CPI evaluates 180 countries and territories based on perceived public sector corruption, relying on the assessments of experts and business representatives. The scoring system ranges from zero, indicating extreme corruption, to 100, representing minimal corruption. India’s performance, scoring 38, illustrates persistent challenges in governance and corruption eradication within its public sector.
Comparatively, India’s neighbors in South Asia also face significant corruption issues. Pakistan ranked 135th, followed by Sri Lanka at 121st, and Bangladesh at a low 149th position. China, in contrast, registered a score of 76, placing it somewhat higher than other regional countries. The report emphasizes the ongoing corruption struggle that persists in many South Asian nations.
Despite some countries, such as Ukraine, experiencing improvements, the global average corruption score remains stagnant at 43. Over two-thirds of countries scored below 50. Transparency International raises alarm about high global corruption levels, which severely undermine efforts to address prevalent issues such as climate change and human rights violations.
