DR Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi has called for countermeasures against Rwanda due to the escalating conflict in eastern Congo. In a recent statement at the Munich Security Conference, Felix Tshisekedi, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), called for “countermeasures” against Rwanda due to the escalating conflict in eastern Congo. He accused Rwanda of provoking conflict situations without facing any repercussions, emphasizing the urgent need to address these issues to prevent further instability within Africa.
The ongoing conflict, which has lasted over 20 years, has resulted in the internal displacement of more than 7 million people in Congo. Tshisekedi warned that if unresolved, this situation could set a dangerous precedent for increased instability across the continent, highlighting the critical nature of the dialogue among regional leaders.
Rwandan Defense Minister Juvenal Marizamunda responded by stating that Rwanda is also adversely affected by the crisis, experiencing significant human, political, and economic repercussions. He insisted that Rwanda has “nothing to gain” from an unstable DRC, underscoring the regional implications of the crisis.
Panel moderator Christoph Heusgen suggested that dialogue between the two nations is essential for conflict resolution. He encouraged both parties to engage in direct discussions, possibly with UN assistance, rather than making political declarations that might exacerbate tensions.
Meanwhile, reports have emerged that M23 rebels captured Kavumu airport and entered Bukavu, adding to the ongoing violence. Since January 26, the conflict has claimed over 3,000 lives, left nearly 3,000 injured, and displaced over half a million people, compounding the existing humanitarian crisis. This situation has led to significant losses in peacekeeping personnel, with multiple casualties occurring during clashes.
