U.S. and Ukrainian Officials Engage in Talks in Saudi Arabia Amidst Ongoing War

Ukrainian officials are in Saudi Arabia preparing for a possible visit by President Zelenskyy alongside ongoing discussions of U.S.-Russia talks to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian leaders highlight their focus on economic agreements, while denying immediate negotiations with Russia until a solid plan for peace is formulated.

Ukrainian officials have arrived in Saudi Arabia in anticipation of a potential visit from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, amidst ongoing discussions regarding U.S.-Russia negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed the delegation’s purpose is to enhance economic cooperation with regional countries, although she did not specify a connection to the U.S.-Russia talks or detail Zelenskyy’s itinerary.

Andriy Yermak, a senior advisor to President Zelenskyy, stated on Sunday that there will not be any direct negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian representatives in the near future, as Ukraine is focused on developing a strategy for achieving a just peace. Mykhailo Podolyak, another advisor, also denied Ukraine’s participation in the upcoming U.S.-Russia meetings, emphasizing that there are no viable topics to discuss currently.

This announcement comes shortly after U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff indicated the imminent start of high-level discussions in Saudi Arabia regarding a negotiated resolution to the Ukraine conflict. Witkoff expressed hope for productive negotiations, although he declined to reveal further details about the meetings or participants.

Following a recent extensive conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, former President Donald Trump stated that both parties agree to commence negotiations to end hostilities. Trump appointed Witkoff and national security adviser Mike Waltz to lead the discussions, alongside other key officials from his administration, indicating a significant shift in U.S. policy toward Russia.

In response to the situation, President Zelenskyy has firmly stated his refusal to accept any negotiations concerning Ukraine without Ukrainian representation. He is supported by European nations that also demand inclusion in the discussions. The ongoing conflict has left Russia isolated from the West since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for President Putin.

The recent delegation of Ukrainian officials to Saudi Arabia signals potential developments in the quest for peace regarding the war in Ukraine. However, key Ukrainian leaders maintain their stance against direct negotiations with Russia until a clear plan for achieving peace is established. As high-level U.S.-Russia talks are expected, Ukraine insists on its rightful involvement in any resolution discussions, reflecting their commitment to sovereignty and regional stability.
