Cote d’Ivoire Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara

Cote d’Ivoire has reiterated support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, recognizing its conformity with international law and Morocco’s commitment to peace. Tiemoko Moriko emphasized the plan’s credibility and the positive impacts of Moroccan investments on local populations, while urging the resumption of roundtable talks among relevant parties and highlighting human rights concerns.

Cote d’Ivoire has reaffirmed its strong support for Morocco’s autonomy plan concerning Western Sahara, describing it as consistent with international law and praising Morocco’s dedication to a peaceful resolution. Tiemoko Moriko, Cote d’Ivoire’s permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized the significance of transferring multiple powers to the Sahrawi population, thus labeling the proposal a “credible, relevant, and unique” solution.

Moriko’s endorsement joins the backing of over 107 UN member states for the Moroccan proposal. He commended Morocco for its significant investments in the region, which have positively impacted local populations and advanced the Human Development Index. Furthermore, he acknowledged Morocco’s advances in human rights, noting the enhancement of local human rights commissions and collaboration with UN human rights entities.

The Ivorian ambassador called for the revival of roundtable discussions involving Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario Front, last conducted in 2018 and 2019. Moriko believes that continuing these dialogues is essential for fostering a spirit of compromise and good faith to find a lasting solution, in line with recommendations from the UN Security Council.

Moriko also welcomed the participation of democratically elected representatives from Western Sahara in UN Committee of 24 discussions, urging cooperation with the UN peacekeeping mission, MINURSO. He expressed concerns regarding the human rights situation in the Polisario-administered Tindouf refugee camps in Algeria, advocating for a population census as recommended by the UN refugee agency and Security Council resolutions.

In summary, Cote d’Ivoire’s statement reflects a growing international consensus favoring Morocco’s autonomy plan, perceived as a feasible framework for resolving the long-standing conflict in Western Sahara.

Cote d’Ivoire’s endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara reaffirms the increasing international support for a proposal seen as viable and aligned with international law. The emphasis on dialogue and human rights underscores the importance of collaborative efforts among involved parties to reach a peaceful resolution.
