INAM has predicted the potential formation of two cyclones, Honde and Garance, impacting the Mozambique Channel and southern Africa. Honde is likely to strengthen and affect weather patterns in Mozambique while Garance, moving eastward, is deemed to have no significant threat. Safety measures are recommended, particularly for maritime activities, highlighting the need for vigilance as the situation develops.
The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) has forecasted the development of two tropical cyclones, named Honde and Garance, between Thursday and Friday in the southern and eastern regions of Madagascar. While Honde, located approximately 250 km off the coast of Inhambane province, is projected to strengthen into a tropical cyclone, it will primarily generate strong winds and moderate to heavy rains in the Mozambique Channel, affecting areas in Mozambique indirectly.
Meteorologist Lelo Tayob emphasized that although Honde is currently situated at sea and does not pose a direct threat, its size and atmospheric impact will lead to increased rainfall on the mainland due to shifting air masses. Similarly, Tropical Storm Garance is moving east of Madagascar and is also anticipated to become a tropical cyclone, but it poses no danger to Mozambique given its trajectory.
Tayob stated, “[Tropical Storm Garance] will evolve into a tropical cyclone, but given its size, location and movement, which is far from Madagascar, it will not have an impact on the continental part of our country.” He advised that while the systems are safe for now, precautions should still be taken, particularly regarding maritime navigation in light of the anticipated strong winds.
INAM encourages the public to remain vigilant as the situation evolves, ensuring safety measures are in place while monitoring these meteorological developments closely.
In summary, the INAM has issued warnings regarding the formation of Tropical Storms Honde and Garance, emphasizing that while Honde is expected to intensify and influence weather patterns in Mozambique, Garance does not pose a significant threat. Citizens are advised to remain cautious, particularly those involved in maritime activities, as these storms could affect wind and rain patterns in the region. Weather experts stress the importance of preparedness and monitoring updates from meteorological authorities.
