TGS has completed reprocessing of the Block 16 GeoStreamer MC3D seismic dataset in the Lower Congo Basin, aimed at reigniting interest in Angola’s under-explored Block 16. Recent evaluations suggest potential oil recovery and highlight the block’s significance following a decade of stagnation in exploration activities.
The Norwegian seismic company TGS has announced the completion of reprocessing work on the Block 16 GeoStreamer MC3D seismic dataset in the Lower Congo Basin, in collaboration with the Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis (ANPG). This initiative is aimed at revitalizing interest in Angola’s underexplored Block 16, which has not seen significant exploration activities since 2013.
TGS reported a resurgence in exploration within the deepwater Lower Congo Basin, highlighting recent significant discoveries that have rapidly been brought into production. The company emphasized that their rejuvenation project spans 3,684 square kilometers and employs modern processing techniques to improve imaging, facilitating a detailed analysis of deeper geological formations in both post-salt and pre-salt environments.
Historically, Block 16 has remained largely untouched, with the last exploratory well drilled a decade ago. Recent evaluations, however, have indicated potential oil recovery from Upper Miocene reservoirs in the south, along with partial coverage of the Tchihumba field, which is currently marketed by ANPG and contains estimated recoverable volumes of approximately 136 million barrels.
David Hajovsky, TGS’s Executive Vice President of Multi-client, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting regional exploration. He remarked, “These accumulations, along with the proximity of significant neighbouring discoveries, present strong opportunities for future exploration success.”
TGS has also recently upgraded its Fusion 3D seismic dataset in Sierra Leone, reflecting an increase in international interest in West African opportunities. They further established their dominance in the region by signing an agreement to enhance datasets in Mauritania, reinforcing their role as the leading provider of multi-client subsurface data.
The reprocessing of Block 16’s seismic data by TGS represents a strategic move to renew exploration interest in Angola’s Lower Congo Basin. With a notable resurgence in the region and significant neighboring discoveries, the potential for future oil recovery appears promising.
