Guyana Prime Minister Visits India for World Sustainable Development Summit 2025

Guyana’s Prime Minister Mark Phillips arrived in India to attend the World Sustainable Development Summit 2025, aiming to reinforce their growing relationship. The summit focuses on sustainable development and climate solutions. Guyana’s Health Minister expressed gratitude for India’s support during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting how the vaccine provision has bolstered ties between the two nations.

On March 4, 2025, Guyana’s Prime Minister Brigadier (Retd) Mark Phillips arrived in New Delhi to participate in the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2025. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, emphasized that Prime Minister Phillips’s visit would significantly enhance the multifaceted ties between India and Guyana, particularly in sustainable development and renewable energy initiatives. Jaiswal’s welcome message highlighted the ongoing strengthening of India-Guyana relations.

The WSDS, scheduled from March 5 to 7, will focus on the theme “Partnerships for Accelerating Sustainable Development and Climate Solutions.” This annual summit, organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), brings together various stakeholders to address critical issues concerning sustainable development worldwide.

In a previous statement, Guyana’s Health Minister Frank Anthony expressed immense appreciation for India’s timely assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the provision of vaccines that were vital in saving lives in Guyana. He noted that while many countries hoarded vaccines, India made an exception by facilitating timely support despite facing its own challenges.

Minister Anthony remarked, “The vaccines that we receive from India helped us to save many lives because… India stepped up and was the first country to be able to give us the COVID vaccines.” This gesture significantly enhanced the relationship between the two nations. He further commended India’s advancements in healthcare, expressing a desire for Guyana to emulate India’s healthcare practices.

Anthony also mentioned the visits of Indian leaders to Guyana as reinforcing their bilateral relations. He recalled Prime Minister Modi’s visit in November 2024 and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit in April 2023, both of which resulted in strengthened ties and signed agreements in health. He stated, “Their presence and visit helped to further strengthen our relationship.”

The arrival of Guyana’s Prime Minister in India for the World Sustainable Development Summit underscores the strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations. The collaboration in healthcare and the timely support during the pandemic have further solidified this partnership. Both countries are focused on enhancing their multifaceted relationship, especially in sustainable development and renewable energy, leading towards joint objectives for future collaboration.
