In Oromia, where violent clashes have persisted since 2018, medical services have deteriorated significantly. The WHO reported that between January and October 2023 alone, Ethiopia documented 7.3 million malaria cases and 1,157 deaths. Furthermore, with nearly half of these cases originating from Oromia, the local healthcare infrastructure faces unprecedented challenges, according to Gemechu Biftu of the Oromia Physicians Association, who stated that, “Programmed supplies of anti-malarial drugs have been disrupted due to the armed conflict.”
Healthcare professionals, including Legesse Bulcha from Nejo General Hospital, have noted a troubling increase in malaria infections, which has now accounted for 70 percent of treated patients—up from only 20 percent in previous years. The worsening crisis is attributed not only to the armed conflict but also to climate change, with rising temperatures fostering conditions favorable for malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Legesse emphasized, “Unlike before, there are still significant numbers of cases during the dry season.”
The medical community is expressing deep concern over the escalating humanitarian disaster, with Doctors Without Borders reporting alarming trends in malaria cases. Rachelle Seguin highlighted that current numbers are likely the highest ever recorded in Ethiopia, stating, “I think it’s a little bit the perfect storm: you have increasing temperatures, you’ve had conflict in the country for years.” The impending rainy season may exacerbate the situation further.
Compounding these issues is significant funding disruption from the United States, which used to provide about 40 percent of the global malaria budget. Dr. Nuredin Luke noted that the cessation of aid would worsen health outcomes, not just for malaria but for other diseases as well. “The recent USAID funding cut would significantly increase morbidity and mortality,” he remarked.
For individuals like Lema, the emotional burden is immeasurable. Stricken with grief and unable to sustain his farm, he relies on relatives for support. “I have been completely depressed,” he shared, reflecting the intense heartbreak felt by many whose lives have been irrevocably altered by this ongoing crisis.
